5 Interesting Facts You Didn’t Know About Tea

Tea is such a common word that we tend to assume we know everything there is to know about brewing and drinking tea. But there are still facts to be revealed about tea, so common, but yet so little acknowledged.
We all know that tea is a great social leant. That is one of those tea facts which Europe and Asia surely know about and cherish it to its worth. From deeply spiritual tea ceremonies to family dinner tea, from inspirational tea rooms to love stories which are born and die in front of a cup of tea, these are all precious moments that we all know and respect about tea.
I am personally a fan of the Japanese tea ceremony. It is a complex ceremony which involves elaborate clothes and interesting stages. But all in all it involves serving and enjoying together with your guests a special variety of tea named matcha, and connecting with them at a highly spiritual and mental level. Most of the ceremony is done on silent, but there are some traditional words which the host addresses to the guests and some traditional answers which the guests use to respond. Absolutely beautiful!

# 1 All teas are made out of the same plant which is known as the tea plant or Camellia Sinensis
This plant originated in China and it is cultivated there and in other Asian countries. The Fujian region of China is highly known and appreciated for its amazing tea varieties. All the teas we know such as green tea, black tea, oolong tea are all coming from the same source, Camellia Sinensis, that is.
What about the other herbal teas? Well the word “tea” is actually wrongly used to describe other plant infusions such as mate, rooibos, hibiscus, chamomile and so on. The other plants from which we make herbal beverages do not give us tea as a product, but infusions or tisanes. So herbal teas aren’t at all teas. There are herbal beverages similar to tea, but similarity isn’t identity.
# 2 There isn’t such a thing as decaf tea
All the teas contain caffeine in a small dose or in a more important one, but there isn’t such a thing as decaff teas. It is in their nature to contain a certain caffeine level. Even if when buying tea on their label may write something about decaffeinated tea, the tea leaves may still contain some residual caffeine.
So if you’re caffeine sensitive you should better avoid drinking teas and replace them with something much safer when talking about caffeine, something like the so called herbal teas or plant infusions.
# 3 Tea shouldn’t be prepared with boiling water
Did you find that black tea isn’t to your liking and you don’t understand why British love it so much? Did the green tea gave you a tummy ache after you had it? If the answer to both of these questions is “yes”, then let me ask you another one: Did you make those teas with boiling water? If the answer is “yes” again, then here’s your mistake.
There are only a few varieties of teas to be prepared with boiling water. But most of the time tea should be brewed with warm water somewhere between 65 to 80 Celsius degrees. It is done this way to avoid the leaves to lose their natural flavor and aroma. Tea is like caviar. You should know how to prepare it and how to consume it before actually having it. Enjoy!
# 4 Tea leaves are reusable
This is a good piece of news, isn’t it? We can reuse tea leaves, especially pu’erh’s and oolong can actually get better taste and flavor from steeping to steeping. The process of re-steeping certain tea leaves can reveal different and hidden flavor from the first preparation to the second and third one. This way you can reduce the cost of tea, you can afford buying qualitative tea and reuse it once or twice. Sounds good to me!
Only one observation here: the re-steeping of the tea leaves you previously used, has to take place in the same day as the first steep. Leaving the used tea leaves from one day to another isn’t a good choice as they lose their flavor.
# 5 There isn’t such a thing as a diet tea
Lose the myths about easily dropping off extra kilos with just the miraculous tea bags. Some of these don’t even contain real tea, but some plants which are diuretic. Want to lose weight? Eat healthy, make exercise and as for tea, I suggest green or black teas which are known to be real calories burners because they help the organism to properly assimilate what you feed it with. Make sure to buy tea leaves if you want to see some results.
